1. Describe what led you to Precinct 2 and why you decided to intern here.

When I was applying for summer internships, I knew that I wanted to work in local government because I wanted to explore how sustainable community development could be achieved through effective programming. I decided to intern here because I knew that the work that is done in this office directly impacts people’s quality of life, and that aligns perfectly with one of my career goals to increase the number of choices people have so they can live happy lives.

2. As an intern for the communications and marketing division, what have been the most valuable learning experiences?

Of the endless learning experiences, I have as an intern for the communications and marketing division, I would say the most valuable experiences are those that take me into the field.

Through witnessing the preparation and execution of events such as the State of the Precinct which had an audience of 800 business professionals to a Beat the Heat air conditioning unit delivery, and the Free Walls Art Project and Houston Dynamo partnership, I learned that communication in all its forms (visual, verbal, and written) is vital to expressing that we are one community. Most of all, I have learned the craft of using the truth to write compelling narratives.

3. What are your plans after interning with Precinct 2?

After interning with Precinct 2, I plan to obtain my Texas Teacher Certification, and I remain open to the possibilities of what is to come. This experience has fueled my passion for meaningful storytelling and engaging the community to drive impact, so I am confident that my next step will be my best yet.

4. What advice would you offer a college student who is looking to pursue a career in government or communications/marketing?

I would say build your network NOW! Ask your professors if they can connect you to someone in your field of interest. Set up a conversation with people on LinkedIn who are doing what you want to do and ask them how they got there!

The skills and confidence you gain from being a self-starter is invaluable. Ask people on your campus if they need publicity for their campaign, business, or even themselves! Discover where your passions show up in the world around you, and volunteer for local organizations or advocacy groups relevant to you.

5. What's something you've learned about Precinct 2 that you didn't know before and you found surprising.

I was surprised to learn the depth of resources Precinct 2 dedicates to workforce development and adult education. Creating pathways for employment is key to economic empowerment at the micro level, and Precinct 2 does that! I am inspired to know programs like Train2Empower in Precinct 2 are changing lives.
