The Dangers of Drunk and Drugged Driving

According to TxDOT, 121 people were killed by drunk drivers in Harris County this year alone, making it the top county in Texas for DUI deaths. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) reports Texas leads the nation with a total of 1,438 drunk driving deaths per year. As we approach the holidays, driving under the influence tends to rise, and it’s important we’re mindful of these statistics - if not for yourself, then for those around you.

How we are empowering our communities by strengthening programs

Since Commissioner Adrian Garcia took office, he has made it his goal to strengthen, build and create growth in Precinct 2. He wants to see the communities he serves better than when he acquired them. This vision combines the realities and challenges in the precinct which includes; having amongst the lowest medium income, lowest homeownership rate, lowest education attainment rates and the highest number of children and adults without health insurance.  To help address these disparities, Commissioner Garcia has tasked his team to revamp the way we work with communities by strengthening programs offered. The programs offered at our Community Centers and Parks now focus on improving the overall quality of life of residents by creating educational, empowering, and useful engagements that help close the gap that impacts our communities. The objective is to make Precinct 2 a place where people can work, play, and live.

We can do better with bail reform (Op-Ed)

A person is guilty until proven innocent or wealthy. This is how our old outdated justice system has been working in Harris County for far too long. There have been incidents that an individual may stay in jail for months. Most are jailed not because they are violent criminals or guilty, but because they cannot afford to pay a bond. This system is far from just and fair because it penalizes the poor.  This may be a single mother who was arrested for failing to pay a traffic ticket, loses her job, misses payments for her mortgage and as a result, loses her home. She is now homeless. Or it could be a young man who was wrongfully accused but spent 6 months in jail before someone took a closer look at his case. We have to fix this. We can do better. We must do better.
